My first commission

The client commissioned a ring to be designed and made for her sister’s 21st birthday.  They requested that the ring was to be made from silver wire and was simple but contemporary in design.  Her sister wanted to wear this ring at all times and not only for a special occasion.

For this piece, I wanted to have something that was tactile.  I based my design on an abacus.  The abacus has beads that slide along wires which an individual can move by hand.  So I decided that there should be beads made from silver tubing which could slide along a piece of silver wire.  I then thought it would be interesting if instead of having to physically move the beads by hand they would move along the wire themselves.  For this design, it meant that the wire had to be at angle so that the beads could slide back and forth when the person moved their hand.  The beads were patinated to appear a pale lilac colour to distinguish them from the silver wire.
